In French-speaking Africa, many traders only have a smartphone — no PC. The good news: MetaTrader 5 exists as a full mobile app. The nuance: what mobile does very well, and where it quickly hits its limits.
What mobile does very well
- Monitoring and managing positions: opening, closing, modifying a stop-loss or take-profit — perfect from the app.
- Receiving alerts and reacting fast wherever you are.
- Depositing/withdrawing via mobile money directly.
- Learning: reading, watching lessons, reviewing vocabulary.
Where mobile shows its limits
- Fine analysis: spotting market structure, order blocks or drawing several levels is harder on a small screen.
- Multitasking: watching several pairs and timeframes at once is uncomfortable.
- Impulsivity risk: trading from your bed, while walking, between two tasks → emotional decisions. The phone makes over-trading easier.
And running a bot from your phone?
That's the most important limit: an Expert Advisor needs MetaTrader 5 to run continuously. But the MT5 mobile app doesn't run EAs: they require the desktop version, and ideally a VPS on 24/7. If you only have a phone, the solution is precisely the VPS: you rent a "remote PC" you control from your mobile, and the EA runs there without interruption.
Trading well from a mobile
- Keep screen discipline: dedicated trading moments, not "all the time".
- Pre-define your trades (entry, stop, target) rather than improvising on feel.
- Apply the 1% rule and size your positions with the free calculator.
- To automate, go through a VPS — not the mobile app.
