"Should I trade by hand or let a bot do it?" The question is poorly framed. The two approaches don't really oppose each other: they answer different constraints and often complement one another. Here's an honest framework to decide, without dogma.
Manual trading
Trading manually means making each decision yourself. The strengths:
- Adaptability: a human perceives context (news, market mood) a bot ignores.
- Learning: it's by deciding that you truly understand the method.
- Nuance: you can abstain when "nothing is clear".
The weaknesses are… human: emotions, fatigue, lack of discipline, the impossibility of being present 24/7.
Automated trading
An Expert Advisor executes a strategy without emotion. The strengths:
- Discipline: the bot applies the rules, always, without hesitating or "avenging" a loss.
- Availability: it works 24/7 (on a VPS), including at night.
- Consistency: no impulsive decisions, no FOMO.
The weaknesses: a bot has no common sense. It applies its logic even when context has changed — hence the importance of adaptive systems and guardrails.
The real trade-off
The right question isn't "which is better?" but "which one fixes my main weakness?":
- If your problem is emotional indiscipline, automation helps enormously.
- If your problem is lack of understanding, automating too early just hides the hole. Learn first.
- If you lack time, a supervised bot is a good compromise.
Our position: understand first, automate second
At Adestto AI, the order is non-negotiable: learn the method (Smart Money Concepts), then automate what you understand. A bot you don't understand is a black box — exactly what we try to avoid. It's also why automation never exempts you from risk management.
